The garden design process - what to expect

The first thing Andrea will be keen to do when she receives your enquiry is have a chat on the phone. Then she’ll mail you her Client Questionnaire, which should help you develop your thoughts on what you want from your garden.

The next step is a site visit to meet each other, familiarise Andrea with your plot and help you both develop an understanding of your needs and aspirations (at this stage, it’s common for clients to not completely know themselves, so don’t worry!). She’ll then send you a summary of her understanding of your brief, along with a quotation for the design fee.

There is no cost to get to this stage.

Once you’ve approved the quote, your garden will be measured up and drawn up in a 3D CAD package called Sketchup, to act as the template for the new design. Sketchup is a great tool for helping you visualise the end result.

As the design develops, Andrea will keep in touch to ensure you’re happy at every stage. She’ll compile a digital pinboard of recommendations for plants, hard landscaping materials and general concepts.

When you’ve approved the design in principle, it’s time to get in the landscapers round to calculate the cost of construction. Sometimes the design may need a tweak at this stage to ensure the project is within budget.

During the build, Andrea will co-ordinate the project through regular liaison with yourselves and the landscapers.

Planting

Andrea will put forward her recommendations for plants, taking on board any preferences you might have. Her suggestions are usually presented in the form of a digital pinboard, which allows you to research each plant further if wish to. She’ll calculate how many of each are needed, arrange their supply and set them out in position ready for the landscapers to plant up.

Tried and trusted landscapers

Oxford Garden Guru has a bank of excellent independent landscapers to call on, to suit the scale and nature of your project. They’ve been carefully chosen over the years for their intelligent, professional approach, attention to detail and general nice-to-have-aroundness, and they’ll bring your new garden to life under Andrea’s watchful eye. She will introduce you to the company’s director and work closely with them until the landscaping is completed.

Oxford Garden Guru is not affiliated to them in any way, doesn’t sub-contract to them and doesn’t benefit financially from using them. They’re chosen simply because they’re excellent at what they do, and great to work with.
