At Park View in Woodstock, we overcame the challenge of this quirkily shaped garden by creating three distinct but unified areas.
The original garden was a good size but oddly shaped. By breaking the space down into three distinct areas we made the space feel more logical, and created a sense of journey as you wander through from one end to the other.
The area next to the house is perfect for dining and entertaining. The formal, geometric layout and cottage-style planting, featuring soft roses and scented lavender, bring the traditional feel the clients were looking for. Standard trees surround the paving and soften the boundary walls, adding drama, structure and privacy. A gently bubbling Corten steel water feature invites you to explore the rest of the garden.
A key element of the clients’ brief was to include lots of trees. The central section has a woodland feel, with a path of limestone cobbles and self-binding gravel leading weaving through architectural multi-stemmed trees. Their brilliant white bark and underplanting of hellebores light up the garden on a winter’s day.
You emerge onto a softly curving lawn - flanked by espaliered fruit trees and perennial borders -that leads the eye round to a bench at the end of the awkwardly-shaped space.
